now i can imagine them as fresh faced boys up on stage. a lot of undiscovered country for me here in this excellent recording, great sound, lots of Pig and its just a treat to be able to hear some old familiar tunes before they blossomed into more familiar friends. ya have to give it five stars just for being able to look into this portal of time.

Fabulous, high-energy show
One of the best of year. Tight playing and vocals, (with some strong Pigpen songs), and lots of up-tempo renditions. One of the best Beat It On Down the

Line's of any year, with Pigpen's keyboard driving a frenetic pace. Great Jerry jams on Creampuff War and Dancing in the Streets (a long jam with the end cut off, alas), Same Thing, and Smokestack. The Same Thing starts slow and speeds up to a quick-paced Jerry/Pigpen guitar/keyboard jam. Smokestack Lighting is down and dirty blues, smoky and moody, harp and guitar -- the first time Dead played it, according Deadbase -- which slips into a slower King Bee, which has the feel of Hendrix' Voodoo Child. Man, oh, man. Back up tempo with Midnight Hour (18-minute rap), faster than later renditions.

of Dancin' here gets cut off about 8 minutes in to Jerry's first solo. Listenable if you can tolerate some defects. The more a fan of Pigpen you are the more you'll like this recording, because he's lively and animated, leading the band on 5 of the 12 songs. Jerry and Pig team up for an amazing Smokestack, and it sounds more like Howling Wolf's original version. There is a musical transition to King Bee, with the psychedelic playing style of Jerry, on the Guild Starfire, twanging and ringing out loud and clear.
